TradeMastery AI Tutor · EPA 608 Prep
Why do we measure superheat at the suction line and not somewhere else?
Good question — and it trips up a lot of people on the 608.

Superheat is the heat added above the boiling point. By the time refrigerant reaches the suction line, it should have fully evaporated in the evaporator. We measure there to confirm two things: the refrigerant is 100% vapor (no liquid slugging the compressor), and we can calculate how much heat was actually absorbed.

Think of it like checking a pot of boiling water — you don't check halfway through the pot, you check after it's fully boiled. Make sense?
What happens if superheat is too low?
Low superheat = liquid refrigerant reaching the compressor. Compressors are designed to compress gas, not liquid. Liquid refrigerant causes slugging — and that can destroy a compressor fast.

On the 608, remember: low superheat = flooding. High superheat = starving. You'll see both on the exam.
